Unusual Views of the Statue of Liberty

It's almost obligatory, on your first visit to New York City, to pay the lady in the harbor a courtesy call. We call her the Statue of Liberty - but her real name is Liberty Enlightening the World - and she stands majestically, greeting all newcomers, on Liberty Island - a short boat ride from Battery Park (on the southernmost tip of Manhattan).

As lady liberty is instantly recognizable to virtually everyone in the world, I wanted, during my visit this past June, to photograph the statue in some unusual or never seen ways. The nine photographs above were all taken on Liberty Island and were all taken from the ground. Photograph #5 surprised even me as it looks to have been taken from the air (don't ask me how I did it as I don't know - just lucky).

Most of the black and white photographs had the sun hidden directly behind the statue, hence the intended look of overexposure.

Travel Tip: I would strongly recommend that you purchase your tickets online for your visit to Liberty Island. You can schedule your departure time and then pick up your tickets at will call - by doing this you will avoid the very long lines to purchase tickets. Keep in mind that a visit to the top of the pedestal or to the crown also requires a separate reservation (and you need to make these reservations months in advance).
